We've learned from an MRI that Ben has suffered brain damage in both hemispheres. What precisely this means for his longterm prognosis is yet to unfold. What's certain is that he'll require longterm rehabilitation.
Although discouraging, this news of brain damage does not cheapen the miracle of Ben's experience one bit for me. He is alive! His miracle is a miracle of survival. We're in this with Ben for the long haul.
Yesterday Ben said his head was swimming and that he felt like he was drowning. Quite poetic and astute, I think. Poor thing is so confused. Yet he's where he needs to be with expert medical care, surrounded by people who love him. I hope when he breaks through the water and comes to the surface that his outlook will be brighter than ever before.
Because of Ben's various treatments and his need to rest we, with the hospital staff, ask that people respect the ICU's policy of family visitors. But please, please, please send your uplifting messages that we can read to Ben when we visit him. We know there are so many people out there who love him too.
There's power in positive thinking.

I had a very good visit with Ben today and he is very aware of what has happened to him and how he got there. Our challenge now, as his family and true friends, is to help him move forward from this point to a better place. I want to express my appreciation to my dear daughter who set this blog up to enable Ben's friends and family to be updated on the changes in his condition and provide him with much needed support. The encouraging words provided through this blog have given Ben a feeling of how much he is loved by many people. I hope that we will all use this site for the purpose for which it was intended and and not feel compelled to pursue other agendas. Thanks to Ben's friends and family for their loving support.
Dad
Today - August 1 has been a tougher day for Ben and we have learned more about how ill he is. In addition to the issues with kidneys and brain damage, Ben has an enlarged heart. His high heart rate continues to be a concern and he is having problem breathing. Today he is very tired, but he is fighting to get well. Please continue to remember him in your prayers. It helps.
Dad
Thanks for the update, Ben's dad. I'm sad to hear that he had a bad day, but I'm keeping him in my thoughts. It really saddens me that such a good person is having to deal with so much. I just hope he and your entire family know that there are literally tons of people out there who care deeply for him and want the best for him.
